Linville Gorge Peregrine Update PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 21 April 2008
Here is an update on the Linville Gorge Peregrine Closure from Chirs Kelly:

Hello everyone. I wanted to give you a heads up that a change may be forthcoming with the closure order in the north end of Linville Gorge. The current closure of Table Rock still stands until the change has been made by the USFS. Basically, the peregrine falcons have moved off of Table Rock and down the Gorge to NC Wall. The Table Rock eyrie was vulnerable to terrestrial predators, so they have moved to a location that is safer from predators. The USFS was notified immediately but they are tied up with wildfires at the moment. Unfortunately, this means that Table Rock is still technically closed and NC Wall is open until the closure has been officially changed by the USFS. The falcons are quite vulnerable to disturbance at this time in the nest cycle so I am asking people to please consider voluntarily staying off the main section of NC Wall. Other areas of the Gorge are open for climbing: the Amphitheater, Chimneys, Gold Coast, Hawksbill, and sections of Shortoff. There is a separate pair of falcons nesting at Shortoff (as usual), so that closure still stands and will remain unchanged. I will send an update as soon as the change has been made official by the USFS. Thank you for your cooperation!

Mock Rescue at Ship Rock May 4 PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 14 April 2008
The Blue Ridge Parkway and Linville Central Rescue Squad are
conducting a mock rescue at Ship Rock on Sunday May 4th beginning at 1pm.  The purpose of the exercise is to practice both incident command and
technical skills (high angle and medical) with a live patient.  The
scenario will be a fallen rock climber and there will be several high angle
obstacles to surmount. The area will not be closed to climbing although the rescue squad recommends that climbers divert to other venues for that afternoon if possible.

Car pooling is a NECESSITY!!!!

We have received phone calls from the Nature Conservancy, who still owns that property, and they got a call from the Lake Lure Fire Department concerning this event and the perceived traffic issues it may cause.

With your help, this event would prove to be a success and set others' mind at ease concerning parking, traffic, and impact.

CARPOOL, CARPOOL, CARPOOL !!!!!!!
Only park in designated parking spots, don't "create" your own spot in the woods.
Parking along Boys Camp Road is NOT AN OPTION, you might get towed

Meet your friends at the Lake Lure Visitor Center and CAR POOL!!!!
If you live in Asheville, Black Dome has offered parking.
The Ingles on Hwy 74 in Fairview is another option.

PLEASE, help us make this a really fun, chill event.
