Area Report : December 2005
Well, I got out to Big Green a few weeks back and prime season is upon us. Sunlight hits the wall about 10:30 am and provides a mild climate in all but the most brutally cold temps. So get out there and explore some of the greatest watergroove and slab routes that NC has to offer.
Big Green sits in the secluded and beautiful Panthertown Valley. The routes here are tall (about 300-500 feet) and can at times be quite heady. While leading routes here is not for the meek, the rewards from challenging yourself on this style of climbing are many. Don't belive the hype that you have to be some rock god scare you away from this wonderful resource. There are plenty of routes at Big Green that have far more frequent protection than Stone Mountain and the rock is so much more featured that you are more often than not standing on "something" rather than smearing for dear life. Routes like Ground Controls and Panthertown Knobs are very reasonable and offer opportunities to TR neighboring lines.
