From Park Superintendent Erik Nygard: The Hanging Rock State Park closure at the north end of Moore's Wall will be in effect through July 11, 2008. The peregrine falcons have had a successful nest and a fledgling has been spotted. It will require the closure be kept in place until July 11th for the fledgling to get sufficient use of its wings to fend for itself. This is a particularly important time to follow the closure of Moore's Wall. Please honor the falcons as they fly along the wall chasing vultures and other birds on the drafts formed along the rock cliffs. Moore's Wall is thought to be the most easterly, natural nesting site in N.C. for peregrine falcons. Also of note. The vault toilet at the Moore's Wall Climbing Access Parking Area is open for use. However, changes need to be made to the door locking mechanism to prevent it from locking when individuals exit the building without physically manipulating the handle. Please pass the word around to make sure the door handle is unlocked before closing the door! Thanks for your patience. In the meantime, call 336-593-8480 if the door is locked while the building is not occupied. Thanks, Erik Nygard |
