Triple Crown

With the lease signed and trail work completed, the Asheboro Boulders opened October 13, 2007. At the most recent CCC Annual Meeting at Hound Ears-14, the bouldering community demonstrated again that it is actively involved in opening and keeping open boulder fields throughout the southeast. To be exact, Jim Horton and the Triple Crown series stepped up in a big way and offered to pay the lease, on behalf of the CCC, each year for the Asheboro Boulders. How perfect that folks participating in an awesome regional comp can do so, knowing that their entry fees are going right back to local access efforts?

Opening the Asheboro Boulders has been a long time coming. For all of us. Private landowner, Ben Crotts, has been through the ringer to make our climbing on his land possible. He has been through a lot over the past 7 years to get the new road easement. He will be out there most weekends, so if you see him please express your thanks to him for all he has done. On September 15, Mike Dean, local advocate and steward for Asheboro, organized a trail day through the Adopt-A-Crag program. Jim Horton made a point to be there, volunteer and hand the check for the signed lease directly to Ben.

Presently, members are receiving parking passes, a map and the rules as they are set out in the legally binding lease via snail mail. Mr. Crotts is pleased with our efforts and agrees the passes are a good idea. Our access to Asheboro is a privilege, not a right. Ed Williams and Jon Lane are constructing a kiosk, which you will want to review each trip for any updates!

Again, props to Ben for sticking with us for all these years. He could have walked away a long time ago, but he respects our desire to wrestle his righteous pebbles! Thanks to Jim Horton and all those who participate in the Triple Crown for seeing the lease paid! And last but not least, Mike Dean. Folks, Mike has stayed on top of this, caught piles of grief from disgruntled peeps and stayed focused on the prize: access for all of us to Asheboro Boulders.

As always, check the message board for updates!
